As fall arrives and the holiday season approaches, it's also time to start thinking about New Year's resolutions. Why wait until January to clean out your medicine cabinet? Autumn is an excellent time to reassess your health and wellness goals and examine the contents of your medicine cabinet. Start your mornings right, well before the holiday hustle and bustle, by giving your medicine cabinet a makeover today.
Recently, Pharmacist and Professor of Pharmacy and Therapeutics Dr. Ed Krenzelok shared expert tips on when to purge items from your medicine cabinet and which products might support your health and wellness goals.
We’re excited to share the full medicine cabinet makeover segment with our BubbForest Health community.1 Don’t wait until spring to clean out your medicine cabinet.
Here are four of Dr. Krenzelok’s tips for maintaining a healthy medicine cabinet:
- When in doubt, throw it out: Items have a shelf life, especially once opened. It's crucial to check expiration dates and consider discarding items without expiration dates that have been opened for about a year.
- Keep or replenish everyday basics: Maintain a stock of essentials for good oral hygiene and wellness, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, lozenges, and supplements like probiotics, throughout the year.
- Rethink storage locations for medications: Dr. Krenzelok points out that humidity in the bathroom can affect medications. Moreover, it's essential to store medications in child-proofed areas. Despite its name, a medicine cabinet may not be the ideal storage location for medications.
- Discard medications safely: Instead of throwing medications in the trash, where they could end up in landfills, or flushing them down the toilet, where they could harm the environment, explore community medication take-back programs or consult your nearest pharmacy for proper disposal of unneeded or expired medications.
Your medicine cabinet can be a valuable tool in helping you start each morning focused on your health and wellness goals.
