Candle Making 101: A Super Simple Start to DIY Candles
If you're looking to brighten your life with a DIY project, consider candle making. This age-old craft not only enhances the ambiance of homes and sacred spaces but also offers a fun, creative experience.
Candles bring a warm flicker and soothing scents that help relax your mind, providing comfort, coziness, and calm that can transform any space.
Why Make Your Own Candle?
Creating homemade candles not only adds a personal touch to your project but also allows you to customize the size, scent, wax, and wick according to your preferences.
Are you weary of fast-burning paraffin wax? You have the option to choose alternatives like soy or beeswax. Perhaps your favorite scent is no longer available or has been discontinued by the candle company. In that case, you can recreate it using your own essential oils.
Moreover, candles make excellent gifts for any occasion, thanks to the wide array of fragrance oils available. Personalize them by placing them in unique containers such as mason jars for a rustic look or even a cleaned-out jelly jar for a farmhouse feel.
Ultimately, making candles is simply enjoyable.
How to Make Your Own Candle
This beginner-friendly recipe is a good starting point, but feel free to experiment with different waxes, wicks, and jars. For size adjustments, use your jar as a measuring tool: fill it with wax, then double that amount to determine how much you need.
Note: We used sage essential oil in this recipe, but feel free to use any fragrance you prefer!
Supplies:
- 8 oz jar of your choice
- 1 pack of soy wax for candles
- 1 pack of candle wicks
- Double boiler (or glass measuring cup and saucepan)
- 1 thermometer
- 1 spatula
- 1 candle wick holder (or two pencils)
- 0.4 oz of fragrance oil or 30-40 drops of essential oil (any scent)
Instructions:
- Take approximately 6 oz of soy wax and place it into a double boiler, or put the wax in a glass measuring cup inside a saucepan filled to ¼ with water.
- Heat on the stove over medium heat, stirring occasionally with a spatula until the wax is fully melted.
- Dip the bottom of one candle wick into the melted wax, then center and secure it at the bottom of your 8 oz jar.
- Use a candle wick holder or position two pencils on either side of the wick to keep it straight.
- When the wax reaches 150° F, remove it from the heat and stir in your chosen fragrance or essential oil.
- Allow the wax to cool to between 135° F and 120° F, then pour it into your jar.
- Let the candle set overnight for optimal results.
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch before lighting to enjoy your new candle.
This basic candle recipe is a solid foundation that invites experimentation. If you're considering a wood wick, remember that it needs to be fully dipped in wax to maintain the flame.
We hope you enjoyed this guide on making your own candle. Have fun exploring different additions like colors or flowers, and vary your fragrances and jars!
